Workplace safety should be among the most important things for an employer and an employee. Therefore, a hazard assessment should be done to make sure that there are no safety issues for anyone while on the job. Not only should occupational health and safety matter to a good employer, OHS will make sure that companies are keeping safe working conditions.
What is a hazard assessment? This is when the company management and employees do a thorough check to make sure that there are no job safety issues at all. The job tasks are analyzed to make sure that the person doing the job is capable of doing so, the tools used are safe for the worker and the task itself is not causing any undue harm or creating a safety hazard.
Most companies will have a safety program in place at work. This will ensure that risks are mitigated to reduce the possibility of someone getting hurt under circumstances that could have been controlled. This means that an employer will provide anit-slip shoes if working on in a slippery environment, or will make sure that all floors are swept to avoid a glass wound from a sauce bottle falling and breaking.
This safety program could also teach employees about proper lifting techniques and how to stretch properly before and after work to avoid injury. Anything that educates employees and keeps them safe will go into this safety program.
A safety management system ensures that all accidents are documented as well as what action was taken. This will prevent employees from future injury, and it will also help a company document the steps it took to correct the problem and provide a safer working area for employees. An example could be requiring employees to wear mesh gloves whenever using a knife in response to an employee cutting themselves with a knife.
Workplace safety should be an important part of any company culture. It costs money to deal with liability issues and to have to replace employees should they leave due to injury. Having a safety management system in place is much easier and the employees will appreciate knowing that they have a safe place to work and be as productive as possible.
